Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments on the market today, and there are a number to choose from. With treatments like Botox®, Dysport and Juvederm, patients have plenty of options that will effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Now, there is another dermal filler entering the scene and creating quite a stir. Elevess™ is an FDA-approved injectable dermal filler currently available in the EU, Canada, Chile and Peru. Will this latest non-invasive treatment make it big in the U.S.?
What is Elevess™?
Elevess™ is the first hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that includes lidocaine, an anesthetic, that improves patient’s comfort level while receiving the treatment. With a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, or HA, and a special cross-linking formula, Elevess™ is a durable injectable that makes for long lasting effects.
HA is a natural material found in the body, and it plays a vital role in tissue repair, functioning as a lubricant in cartilage and other skin tissues. This material is continually produced in the body, degrading slowly over time. HA in the skin allows for large quantities of water to be absorbed, forming complexes with collagen and elastin, resulting in a support structure that contributes to more elasticity and volume in the skin. But when age, pollution and sun decrease the production of HA, wrinkles become more prominent. Elevess™ replenishes HA, keeping skin hydrated, filling out facial wrinkles and fine lines and bringing volume back to sunken skin.
How is Elevess™ Different?
Elevess™ has shown to produce natural and immediate results with little to no pain. Since the formula includes lidocaine, there is very little discomfort from the needle, which makes it much more tolerable for many patients. Also, HA degrades slowly, and HA-based fillers can remain in the face for longer periods of time, sometimes up to a year. With its ease of use, minimal pain and long-lasting results, it seems that Elevess™ has many benefits that other dermal fillers lack.
Side Effects of Elevess™
Despite its many positives, Elevess™ does have some notable side effects that potential patients should be aware of. Elevess™ does contain some ingredients, such as sodium metabisulfate and bacterial proteins, that may cause allergic reactions in some people. Patients with a history of severe allergies should not receive this cosmetic injectable.
The most common side effects of Elevess™ are bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness, itching and small bumps around the injection site. Most of these are minor and clear up in less than a week. To avoid further irritation, be sure to limit exposure to the sun after treatment. More serious risks include severe bruising or bleeding, but this is typical in patients taking blood thinners. Elevess™ should not be used on women who are nursing or pregnant, and should be avoided by those who have inflammatory skin disorders, like sores, rashes, hives, cysts or infections.
The best way to reduce the potential risks of Elevess™ is to speak with a certified skincare specialist or plastic surgeon, and provide them with all your medical history and conditions.
